“The quickest way to do many things is to do one thing at a time.” - Christopher Westra You might be thinking that the best way to get things done is to multitask and work on many things at the same time. But by juggling too many tasks, you’re well on your way to feeling overwhelmed and eventually burning out. This doesn’t do your business any good at all. When you focus on working on just one thing at a time, you’re able to think deeper and be more creative, which results in a better finished product. Use Starbucks as an example: they started with just one thing, coffee. They were able to focus on their one thing and they grew an entire empire because of it. If you want an email list full of subscribers, you need to focus on one thing: building your email list. When you invest your energy into your email list, you’re able to convert subscribers into paying customers and build relationships with customers you may not have met any other way. Prioritize, Prioritize, Prioritize Before you spend your time on trendy marketing tactics, make growing your email subscriber list your top priority. Whether you’re launching a new business or looking to grow your current one, a high-quality, relevant email list will help you achieve your goals. This might feel impossible when you have a huge list of high priority tasks in your business, but with email marketing you’ll put automated systems in place to attract potential clients on a consistent basis. Get the Results You Desire You can’t expect your business to grow if you aren’t taking advantage of email marketing. Think strategically about where you want your business to go and plan for that. Start by identifying who your ideal customer is. Create an enticing free offer, and use that free offer to get people to join your email list. Seize the opportunity to market directly to your potential customers by creating and growing your email list. This is one surefire way to grow your business. The Advantage of Doing One Thing When you focus solely on growing your email list, you are putting processes in place that will bring in huge results for your business over time. Email marketing has been proven to work time and time again, so invest the time needed to build a solid list. It doesn’t take a lot of time to create your first series of emails. The beauty of email marketing is that it takes the same amount of time to create and send one email as it does to send 500 emails. By automating the process, you will save time, reach a larger audience, and build relationships with your subscribers. How Are You Going to Make Growing Your Email List a Priority? Avoid getting caught up in trying to do too many things at once and focus solely on building your email list for now. Email marketing is a great way for you to stand out to your audience when you’re starting a business or trying to grow an existing one. Your subscribers are eager to receive your emails, and over time they will begin to see you as an expert in your field. Put time and energy into growing your list, and it will reap endless benefits for your business. It’s easy to feel overwhelmed by trying to do too many things at once, but when you focus on one thing—like building your email list—you set yourself up for long-term success. Just as Starbucks started with one thing and built an empire, you can grow your business by dedicating your efforts to email list building. This single focus will allow you to connect with potential customers, nurture relationships, and turn subscribers into loyal, paying clients. Ready to start building your email list? Download the Email List Planning Worksheet to map out your first lead magnet, ideal subscriber, and email strategy. The hunt for new clients never ends. You need to always be out there generating leads, even when you have plenty of work to keep you busy. It takes time to nurture relationships and you never know when you’ll bump into a lucrative business opportunity. Here are 7 unique methods for finding new clients.
Ask for Referrals The best business comes from referrals. A happy client tells others about you and the new person already knows the unique value you offer. We usually wait for referrals to naturally occur, but it’s even better to ask for them proactively. Make it a regular part of your business operations. Whenever you receive positive feedback from a client, ask if there’s anyone they know who could use the help too. Join Social Media Groups Social media is essential for finding new clients, but are you active in groups? There are groups dedicated to every single topic of interest on these platforms. These are places where people get together and discuss common interests. If you’re active there, you’ll raise your visibility. Speak at Industry Events Find offline industry events and trade shows to speak at. Share your expertise with people and you’ll find new clients. Give a presentation on a topic related to the work you do, then encourage participants to follow you online. By teaching them, you’ve already started the relationship by giving them something of value they can use. Hold Webinars Hold your own educational events online through webinars. The great thing about webinars is that you don’t have to attend physically. They are low-cost and people from anywhere in the world can join. While you share your expertise with participants, you can start building a relationship with them. Put out Press Releases Whenever there’s any news related to your business or your industry, put out a press release. There are directories where you can publish press releases online and media outlets will pick them up. You can also use press releases as content on your website or social media. Write Guest Blog Posts Guest blogging helps you reach a new audience with your expertise. Reach out to blogs in your niche with a pitch for a post and see if they’ll publish it. They get a free piece of high-quality content and you get exposure to their audience. Approach guest blogging strategically, writing and publishing on a regular basis to high-traffic blogs. Create Free Information Products Pay it forward by offering free information products. Info products are cheap and easy to produce. They can be published on your website and other places online for potential clients to download and enjoy in exchange for their email address. You can then market to them through email. Create a Strategic Marketing Mix Always be on the lookout for new marketing channels and strategies. Add them to your mix one by one and monitor the results. Gradually, you’ll have a whole arsenal of techniques to help find new clients. Reflection Question Which one of these seven client attraction strategies could you begin implementing this week to expand your reach? Building relationships is one of the most effective ways to grow your business. Download the free Referral Conversation Guide for practical conversation starters and strategies that make asking for referrals feel natural and professional. Social media is a great tool for finding new clients. Potential clients are there, looking for the products and services you offer, so it’s the perfect place to connect. But it’s not just a matter of creating a profile and having new clients flock to you. You have to proactively go out there and find them. Here are some strategies to best use social media to generate new clients.
Meet Your New Clients Where They Are There are many social media platforms out there, and not all of them are appropriate for finding new clients. Create a target profile for your ideal client and find out which platforms they use for finding goods and services. Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram are very popular with a wide range of users. LinkedIn is a professional B2B networking site, so it’s a great place to look for clients. If you’re not sure, sign up for all and drop the ones that don’t bring results. Communicate Your Natural Strengths at a Glance On each platform you plan to use, create a profile relevant to the work you do. At a glance, a person who doesn’t know you should be able to easily understand what you do. Emphasize your natural strengths and the unique value you offer. Make it visually appealing so it will grab people’s attention and don’t include anything off brand. Search with Hashtags There are people on each site looking for the services you offer. The best way to search for these individuals is to use hashtags. Hashtags are search keywords for social media. Use words and phrases related to your industry and product. Do some research to find hashtags a potential client might use when searching for you. Also, use hashtags when you post content so your posts will appear in searches. Become a Regular Social Media User Spend time each day posting, replying, searching, and interacting with the connections you make. Focus on posting content that helps people solve their problems and shows your expertise since this is your selling point. Content should mostly be informational and not promotional. Focus on building relationships. If they like the information you share, they’ll check you out to see if you’re offering what they need. Point Users to Your Other Content A great way to strike a balance between informational and promotional is to use social media to point to your other content. For example, when you publish a new piece on your blog, tell your social media followers about it and provide a link. This will drive traffic off social media to your other content and you can gain followers there as well. Reach Out to Prospects In addition to posting content and interacting with people naturally on social media, you can reach out to potential clients and give them a pitch telling them what you do. Emphasize the unique benefits you offer. The person might not offer you a job today, but at least you’ll start a relationship with them. Reflection Question: Are you spending your time on the social media platforms where your ideal clients actually engage, or simply where it's most comfortable to post? Consistency on social media starts with having a simple plan. Download the free Weekly Client Attraction Planner to organize your weekly marketing activities and stay focused on the actions that help build visibility and attract new clients. How do you sell yourself to clients? What do you do well that’s unique from other businesses in the market? In order to explain this to prospective clients, you need to clearly understand your unique strengths. Our strengths aren’t always apparent to ourselves, so you have to do some strategic thinking.
Examine Your Experience Go over your experience working in this area. Where have you spent the greatest time working? Whatever you’ve done most is probably something you’re good at. You’ve accumulated knowledge and expertise through doing it. Look at Your Biggest Successes Go back over your history and look for your biggest successes. Find the times when you really achieved something fantastic. For each, what was behind the big success that made it happen? Sometimes the timing was good, you were lucky, or it was something external to your business, but look for instances where something you did brought about the success. Consider Soft Skills Don’t just look at topic areas you know about or hard skills you’re good at. Look also at soft skills like communication, problem-solving, reliability, or other facets of your personality that affect the way you work. One of your natural strengths might be that you always deliver work on time and you’re always easy to reach. Your Reputation What do people say about you? When people have praised you before, what did they say was great about your services? Try to find comments where a customer or client expressed their satisfaction for the work you did and see what they said they were happy with specifically. Gather as many as possible and look for patterns. If you can’t find many, reach out to current clients with a survey asking for their feedback. Focus on the Positive Focus on positive aspects of the work you do, not the negative. For example, “I don’t turn work in late,” isn’t a good natural strength. You can frame it positively by saying, “I always turn work in on time.” Don’t make a list of things you don’t do. Sample Other Services If you have the resources, use other services that are similar to yours and see what’s different about them. You might discover some natural strengths through this. For example, you might find another ecommerce store’s ordering process to be clunky and awkward, leading you to realize that yours is smooth and simple. Make a list of as many natural strengths as you can. You may know some off the top of your head, but try whenever possible to use actual feedback from the market or clients. Use what you discover in your marketing materials. After all, these qualities are the reason people choose you over another similar business. Get into the regular habit of collecting feedback from customers and clients so that you can maintain an understanding of your natural strengths in case they change in the future. Reflection Question: What are three strengths your clients consistently appreciate that you should highlight more often in your marketing? Understanding your strengths is only the first step. The next step is making sure the right people know about you. Once you've identified what makes your business different, the next step is sharing those strengths with the people who are most likely to value them. Download the free Ideal Client Location Checklist to identify the online and offline places where your ideal clients spend their time so you can confidently put your message in front of the right audience. How do you get potential new clients to your website and convert them from visitors to customers? Although you may be active on social media, online forums, and other places online, it’s your website that will have the biggest impact on how you acquire new clients. Here are a few things you can do with your site to help you generate more business.
Keyword Optimization The written content on your site should be search engine optimized with relevant keywords that will bring traffic to it. This will help with search engines like Google. Use a free keyword tool to find some good keywords and focus especially on long-tail keywords. These are longer phrases and sentences that have less competition. Add a Blog Add a blog to your site and post helpful, informational content regularly. This will help with search engines by providing fresh content and more keywords. It will also help to show your expertise in your topic area. You can write on topics that are of interest to your potential clients and show what you know. Include Social Proof Social proof refers to content that shows how you’ve helped others solve their problems. It is very powerful in demonstrating the unique value you offer. Testimonials from former clients are easy to use on your website for social proof. Reach out to people you’ve worked with before and ask if they’d give some feedback that you can use for a testimonial. Use Video Content A great way to tell site visitors about your business is to create a short video that shows you talking to the viewer. This puts a human face on your business. The video can be short and simple. Just introduce yourself and your business and give the viewer your elevator pitch about what unique value you can offer them. Check out Other Business’ Sites Spend some time looking around at the websites of businesses that are similar to yours. See how they represent themselves. Look at their design, their content, and the site navigation. This can give you some ideas on how to improve yours or set it apart. Offer a Free Information Product Put a free info product for download on your site, like an eBook that helps your target market solve some problem they’re facing. This is a great way to demonstrate your expertise and start a relationship with the prospect. In exchange for the free download, they submit their name and email address so you can send them content and promotions by email. Call the Visitor to Action In addition to explaining the unique value you offer, give the visitor a clear call to action. Tell them exactly what they need to do in order to get the benefits you’re promising them. Experiment with different wording in your call to action and see what performs best with your specific audience. Monitor Your Analytics Set aside some regular time to check your analytics to see what’s working and what isn’t. This is how you refine your website strategy and constantly improve to make it more effective. Soon, you’ll have a streamlined site that easily converts visitors into new clients. Reflection Question: Which one improvement to your website could you make this week that would make it easier for a visitor to become a client? Your website should do more than look professional, it should help turn visitors into clients. Ready to strengthen your online presence? Download the free Weekly Client Attraction Planner to organize your marketing activities, follow up with potential clients, and stay focused on the actions that help build visibility and attract new business. Making decisions that have a huge impact on your business isn’t easy, but it’s an extremely important part of running any business. You need to be able to think on your feet and make key decisions quickly and decisively. How do you do that? There is a great deal to be learned by studying CEOs and how they make decisions. Based on Data and Experience A CEO knows everything that’s going on in their company and in the market. They know the numbers. They also have accumulated experience and knowledge from the past. All this information is at their fingertips at any time, and they can access it when needed to make decisions the right way. Inner Knowing Along with data, a CEO makes decisions with a good dose of internal knowing. They have a gut feeling that has been honed through years of listening to the right voice, experience and learning from missteps they’ve taken in the past. A good leader also has high emotional intelligence, which allows them to accurately judge a person’s character at first glance. Strategic Planning and an Eye to the Future One reason CEOs can make decisions so quickly and decisively is that they’ve already considered that the issue at hand might arise. CEOs think strategically, always calculating what could possibly happen and how to react to it. With a plan already in hand, they can make snap decisions for maximum benefit with the least amount of risk. CEOs think proactively, not reactively. They make decisions not from a defensive position but based on what they want to see happen in the future. Unafraid to Make Mistakes CEOs aren’t ambiguous or wishy-washy. They don’t hesitate and ruminate. The downside is that you might make the wrong decision on something important. But rather than fearing failure, a CEO makes that decision based on the best information available, and then accepts the mistake as a great learning opportunity. Even failure is better than indecisiveness. Don’t Do It All Alone Although a CEO looks like the strong individual leader of an organization, they are nothing without their team and network. A good CEO is acutely aware of what they know and what they don’t know. When they need help making a decision, they’re not afraid to ask. They rely heavily on the expertise of trusted partners and team members. Core Values in Mind One of the unique roles of the CEO is protector of the company’s core values. They need to keep these values in mind at all times and make each decision so that it’s in line with them. You don’t need to be the CEO of a company in order to make decisions like one. Whether you’re leading a team, running a small company, or simply working for yourself, you can learn to make decisions like a CEO and lead your business in the right direction. CEOs often approach leadership differently than many entrepreneurs. While every leader is unique, there are several characteristics commonly found among successful CEOs that help them guide organizations, make important decisions, and navigate growth. The good news is that these are not traits reserved for leaders of large corporations. They are habits and leadership skills that entrepreneurs can develop as well. Vision A CEO is responsible for helping the organization move toward a desired future. They can envision possibilities that others may not yet see and communicate that vision in a way that inspires action. This vision not only helps guide strategic decisions but also provides direction and motivation for others involved in the business. Inner Strength CEOs often face criticism, uncertainty, and difficult decisions. Their role requires them to make choices that may not please everyone. While successful CEOs are not immune to self-doubt or setbacks, they develop the resilience needed to continue leading, learning, and making decisions even when circumstances are challenging. Eager to Learn Leaders are often driven by curiosity and a desire to continue learning. This helps them gather information from a variety of sources and make informed decisions about their business, customers, and marketplace. They understand that mistakes and setbacks are part of the learning process and use those experiences to improve future decisions. Excellent Communication Skills Leading others requires effective communication. This includes communicating ideas clearly, listening carefully, and helping people work together toward a common goal. Strong leaders understand that communication is not only about speaking well but also about understanding others and creating clarity throughout the organization. The Big Picture View One of the unique responsibilities of a CEO is maintaining a broad perspective. While details matter, leaders must also understand how all the pieces fit together. They regularly step back from day-to-day activities to evaluate progress, identify opportunities, and ensure the business is moving in the right direction. Strategic Thinking Successful CEOs regularly ask questions such as:
Confident Decision-Making CEOs are expected to make decisions, often in situations where complete information is unavailable. While some decisions require careful analysis and others require quick action, effective leaders learn to make decisions with confidence, accept responsibility for the outcome, and adjust when circumstances change. Passion What ties these characteristics together is a genuine commitment to the work being done. Successful leaders are often deeply connected to the purpose behind their business. That passion helps sustain them through challenges, fuels their desire to learn, and motivates them to continue pursuing their vision. While every CEO is different, these characteristics are commonly associated with effective leadership. The encouraging news is that they can be developed over time. By strengthening your leadership habits, thinking strategically, and keeping your focus on the future you are building, you can begin leading your business with greater clarity, confidence, and intention. Reflection Question As you consider these leadership characteristics, which one is currently serving you well, and which one would have the greatest positive impact on your business if you intentionally strengthened it over the next six months? Take a moment to reflect on how often you approach your business as a leader focused on vision, strategy, and long-term growth rather than simply responding to the demands of the day. How Are You Leading Your Business? Entrepreneurs spend the majority of their time serving clients, managing tasks, and solving immediate problems. But effective leadership requires more than staying busy. It requires vision, strategic thinking, confident decision-making, and a commitment to continual growth. The Think Like a CEO Assessment is designed to help you evaluate how you're currently approaching leadership, decision-making, strategic thinking, and business growth. Whether you're building a new business or leading an established one, this assessment can help you identify strengths, uncover opportunities for growth, and gain greater clarity about your role as the leader of your business. Take the Think Like a CEO Assessment to gain insight into your current leadership habits and identify practical opportunities to strengthen your CEO mindset. One of the many things that make CEOs different from the rest of us is their ability to continue learning new things. It is this accumulated knowledge and experience that allows them to lead their organization in the right direction and make key decisions. Anyone can learn like a CEO and enjoy the benefits of doing so. Bringing It All Together CEOs have wide-ranging interests that all feed into their business decision-making. They know all the key information they need about their company, as well as their employees, their business performance, the industry, and the competition. They know a great deal not only about their business but about other topics as well. For example, they bring information from other industries into theirs. They might be following trends in other industries that they can learn from in their business. Knowing What You Need to Know Although they have casual knowledge on a variety of topics, they’re also good at determining which information is most essential. CEOs don’t have time to know everything down to the smallest detail. This is useful, for example, when holding meetings with business partners. They know what questions to ask to yield just what they’re looking for. They don’t need to know everything, but they need to know enough. Learning from Peers and Mentors Everyone learns differently, but research shows that CEOs learn in a slightly different way than the rest of us. They are more likely to learn from peers or mentors than from traditional educational materials or classrooms. They’re also more likely to be avid readers. They read about business and their industry, but also widely on a variety of unrelated topics. Failure is a Valuable Teacher One key feature of the CEO’s view on learning is how they see failure. Along the way to becoming a successful CEO, you make many missteps. Decisions need to be made quickly and decisively. Sometimes, you make the wrong decision, and it can be disastrous for your business. However, a CEO sees this as a valuable learning opportunity. This is one of those valuable experiences that will inform future decisions and help the CEO move the company in the right direction in the future. Always Open to Learning If you’ve ever known the CEO of a company, you’ll find that they possess an insatiable curiosity. They ask many questions, even about things that don’t seem essential to the business discussion. They’re always seeking something new. This isn’t just for business, but also for the constant self-development that leaders need. It’s no exaggeration to say that one of the key jobs of CEO is to learn. You can learn like a CEO without running a huge business. By studying the way these individuals think and learn, you can help your business run more efficiently and grow faster. Reflection Question: Think about how you currently learn and grow as a business owner. Which of the CEO learning habits discussed in this article would strengthen your business the most: learning from mentors and peers, reading more broadly, staying curious, focusing on the most important information, or viewing setbacks as learning opportunities? What is one step you could take this week to become a more intentional learner? How Do You Approach Learning as a Business Leader? Successful CEOs understand that learning is not something they do occasionally—it's an ongoing part of how they lead, make decisions, and adapt to change. The Think Like a CEO Assessment can help you evaluate how you're currently approaching leadership, strategic thinking, decision-making, innovation, and business growth. No matter how small your company or organization, you can learn something from how CEOs think. Even if you’re a freelancer or solo entrepreneur, you can use what you learn from CEOs to grow your business and lead it like a pro. Here are the ways CEOs think differently than the rest of us. CEOs Look to the Future A CEO has two major concerns. The first is to make sure the company is growing. They have a vision of where the company should be 5, 10, even 20 years from now. Their job is to understand all the moving parts and steer their organization to those goals. Even if you’re a freelance service provider or the owner of a simple ecommerce store, you also have to grow your business so it doesn’t stagnate. Motivating Your Team The second major concern is to motivate and inspire their team. CEOs provide leadership. If you have employees or even virtual assistants, you can keep them motivated and communicate your vision to them. Like a CEO, choose the right people, inspire them, prepare them with everything they need to realize your vision, and then get out of their way so they can use their skills to get results. Maintain the Big Picture View The CEO is the one person in a company who is uniquely able to see the entire organization from a birds’ eye view. Maintaining the big picture doesn’t mean you don’t care about details, but it means you’re not getting bogged down in all the daily tasks. You should focus on the details that are important and outsource and delegate tasks that take away time from planning your strategy for growth. Focus on Your Core Values Every business, no matter how small, has core values that define why they do what they do. There’s a reason you started your business. You wanted to solve problems and make the world a better place. A CEO never loses sight of this, no matter what else they’re doing in their business. Like the leader of a big company, you should always keep your core values in mind and act in accordance with them. Communicate Like a CEO CEOs communicate effectively. This means not just being a good communicator, but also communicating the right things at the right time. If you’ve spent time in a big organization, you know that a good CEO is responsive to their staff, but they also control communications so they have uninterrupted time to work. Strategic Thinking A CEO always has their own ideas. They can always propose something in a timely manner. They think strategically, so they always have a plan. When sudden decisions need to be made, this leader already has an idea ready to propose. They aren’t easily surprised by changes in the market because they’ve already considered every possibility and have a plan ready for each. If you can cultivate these traits in your business, you’ll see better growth and more efficient operations. Master the traits and mindset of CEOs and you’ll see immediate benefits to your business. Reflection: As you consider the CEO traits discussed in this article, which area represents your greatest strength today, and which area would have the biggest positive impact on your business if you developed it more intentionally? Take a few moments to reflect on how often you're operating as the leader of your business versus simply managing the day-to-day responsibilities. Curious About Your CEO Mindset? So often, entrepreneurs are so focused on serving clients, managing projects, and keeping their businesses running that they rarely stop to evaluate how they are leading their businesses. The Think Like a CEO Assessment is designed to help you reflect on your current approach to leadership, strategic thinking, decision-making, innovation, and long-term growth. Whether you're a solo entrepreneur, freelancer, consultant, or small business owner, this assessment can provide insight into your strengths and highlight opportunities for growth. Take the Think Like a CEO Assessment to gain a clearer understanding of your current CEO mindset and identify practical areas for development. Pat Simes is a Business Strategist, blogger and Founder of Innovative Business Solutions and Innovate Academy. She currently resides in the Midwest and is committed to inspiring and empowering entrepreneurs to transform their vision to reality.
If you’re a freelancer or solo entrepreneur, then you’re running your own business. Even if your business is just you on your own, you have to take over the role of CEO. In order to do this, you need to adopt the CEO mindset. Anyone can do this and see the benefits. Here are the keys to how you can approach your work like a CEO. Focus on Results Did you know that 80% of your results come from only 20% of your activities? Do you know which of your daily activities make up that 20%? For a CEO, results are everything. They’re aware of which actions produce which benefits, and they focus their energy here. A CEO doesn’t waste time on activities that don’t get results. Always Trying New Things You can think more like a CEO by constantly trying new things. Leaders of companies are driven by an insatiable curiosity. One great way to cultivate this is to try one new thing each day. Purposely seek out new experiences and areas to learn about, even if they don’t seem strictly related to your business. Get Out of Your Comfort Zone Humans naturally fall into patterns, but these can quickly turn into ruts. If you want to think like a CEO, learn to recognize when you’re stagnating and seek out new challenges. Never back down from a risk when there’s great potential reward. CEOs are fearless risk-takers because they know that facing risk, whether you succeed or fail, is a great learning experience. Look at the Big Picture As the leader of an organization, a CEO has to always take the big picture view. This means looking at your company from the top down, considering its place in the market, its history, and where it’s going. The big picture view means not just looking at the next week or month, but the next five or ten years. Connect to Your Core Values Why did you start your business? Do you think about this every day? Reconnect with the reason you started. What big change did you want to make in the world or in the lives of your customers? Clarify your core values and keep them in mind at all times. Use them whenever you make key decisions. Think Strategically A successful CEO is never surprised by even the most sudden change in the market because they’ve considered everything and made a plan for anything that could happen. Stay one step ahead of competitors and industry changes by considering possible outcomes and how you would respond to each. Then, when it comes time to make a major decision, you can do so quickly and decisively. No matter where you are in your business, start thinking like a CEO now and you’ll see your business grow and get closer to its goals. As you read through these CEO habits, which one represents your greatest strength today, and which one would have the biggest impact on your business if you developed it more intentionally over the next 30 days? Take a moment to write down one specific action you can take this week to begin thinking and leading more like a CEO. Ready to Evaluate Your CEO Mindset? Many entrepreneurs spend their days working in their business but rarely take time to assess how they are leading it. Yet the way you think, make decisions, set priorities, and respond to challenges can have a significant impact on your business growth. The Think Like a CEO Assessment is designed to help you evaluate your current leadership habits and identify opportunities to strengthen your role as the leader of your business. Whether you're just getting started or have been in business for years, this assessment can provide valuable insight into how you're approaching strategy, decision-making, and long-term growth.
